Why the choice of wood is fundamental
A beehive spends most of the year outdoors, exposed to sun, rain and temperature swings. The wood it is made from determines how well the construction will withstand these conditions over time, whether it will warp or crack, and how easily it can be worked during manufacturing and later repairs.
Coniferous wood
Dried coniferous wood — most commonly pine or spruce — is a standard choice for hive manufacturing thanks to its good balance of light weight, strength and cost. It is easy to machine, accepts varnish and paint well, and offers sufficient durability when properly dried and finished.
Limetree wood
Limetree is softer with a fine, even grain, which makes it preferred for elements requiring precise machining or a more pleasant appearance on unfinished surfaces. It is used both for boxes and for frames and small components where a smooth surface is an advantage.
Why 10-12% moisture content is critical
Wood that has not been sufficiently dried keeps losing moisture after the hive is assembled, leading to shrinkage, loosening joints and cracking. A moisture content in the 10-12% range is a recognised woodworking standard for components intended for outdoor use — it balances dimensional stability with the wood's natural hygroscopicity, which will absorb and release moisture seasonally.
Consequences of improperly dried wood
- Faster loosening of the corner joints
- Cracks appearing along the walls, compromising insulation
- Warping of lids and bottom boards leading to gaps
- Shorter service life even with a quality finish
Drying is an investment in longevity
A properly controlled drying process takes longer compared to using raw wood, but this step is what determines whether the hive will keep its geometry and sound joints after several seasons of outdoor use.
